Dear Members and Friends of Beth David Synagogue,
For 81 years Beth David’s Rabbis, leaders and congregation have united to accompany every person and family through both the everyday and momentous moments of our lives.
Throughout the year we recite
Kaddish
Yatom
– the Aramaic prayer that focuses our attention away from our losses and toward praising the Source of Life for the gifts of life and the promise of the future.
Four times a year we recite the
Yizkor
prayer as a community. "
Yizkor Elokim et nishmat ..." May our Judge remember the soul of the person we have lost; may they be bound up with the living in the continuum of life
. Shared together,
Yizkor
opens a window into the Infinite. We will use this book of remembrance at those times, each one an opportunity to embrace those whom we have lost from our community to pray with them and for them as the gift of memory unites all generations.
The Yizkor service reminds us that remembrance and Tzedakah are intimately linked. Proverbs teach us
Tzedakah tatzil mimavet
–
tzedakah
will save from death. Charity has redemptive powers that transform the memory of a person we have lost into the creation of a blessing in the world.
Beth David's Book of Remembrance places the names we remember in the context of Beth David’s history and serves as a record of our commitment to one another. It contains names, prayers and meditations for the
Yizkor
service and for use when you visit the cemetery.
For those who no longer live near Beth David Synagogue, you may request that a book be mailed to you.
You may also purchase Yahrzeit plaques as a perpetual memorial to your loved one. Please contact the office to make arrangements.
We look forward to seeing you at Beth David Synagogue soon.
